Description

Part Time schedule involves working approximately 4-5 days per week, 2-4 hours per day.   Extra hours can be obtained by assisting in the classroom when needed.    In addition, drivers have the ability to take their own children, age 2 or older, on the CSIU school bus during bus runs.

 

The CSIU will provide the free School Bus operator’s Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training to successful candidates.



ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
 The school bus driver reports directly to the transportation coordinator and in his/her absence to the chief financial officer.

 

JOB DEFINITION:  Using an assigned CSIU vehicle the school bus driver will transport students to/from established sites as determined by route descriptions. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Be responsible for the vehicle and the safety of the passengers while driving. Assume responsibility for the care and safety of the students. The school bus driver will never leave students unattended.
  2. Transport children to and from their educational programs. Follow all local, state and federal laws governing operation of school vehicles and school buses.
  3. Transport parents and children to parent meetings and parent teacher conferences.
  4. Comply with CSIU established route schedules and/or collaborate with the transportation coordinator on establishing the best possible route.
  5. Assist with program activities when needed. Render assistance when requested by the parent, bus rider and/or teacher.
  6. Maintain assigned vehicle, according to, but not limited to, the following:
    1. Make sure that the vehicle always has a current inspection sticker and is cleaned.
    2. Make sure that the vehicle is properly serviced within the recommended mileage allotment (approx. every 2,500 to 4,000 miles depending on type of vehicle).
    3. Check the oil and other fluids on a regular basis so all are maintained at the suggested level.
    4. Make required pre-check before driving the vehicle and post-check after finishing run. Be sure to check all safety equipment that will be used for the students (i.e. safety belts, car seats, etc.) used for safe transportation, prior to picking up students.
    5. Check with the CSIU transportation office when vehicle has operating problems.
    6. Make arrangements to have all problems corrected as soon as possible. Request substitute vehicle, if necessary.
  7. Be responsible for seeing that transportation regulations are applied, i.e. practice emergency exit procedures.
  8. Be responsible for maintaining safety procedures at all times.
  9. Communicate effectively with children and adults. Maintain an open line of communication with other bus drivers, Head Start staff and CSIU pupil transportation staff.
  10. Attend program in-services as requested by the transportation coordinator.
  11. Help determine and make a trial bus run. The school bus driver will report to the assigned bus storage location point as directed by the transportation coordinator.
  12. Position wheelchair students on the lift with care. The driver will operate the controls necessary to put the lift in motion.  The driver and aide are responsible for making sure the wheelchair is in a safe position.
  13. Maintain proper records, reports and required forms (included but not limited to Order of Pick Up/Drop Off, Student Emergency Information Card, etc.) on each assigned student and vehicle.
  14. Responsible for assisting in contacting parents, center, CSIU, etc., if necessary, in the event of a delay and/or vehicle breakdown.
  15. Check all safety equipment that will be used for the students, i.e. wheelchair clamps, safety belts, safety vests, etc., used for safe transportation, prior to picking up students.
  16. Maintain current licensing and all physical requirements for school bus drivers. Immediately notify the CSIU transportation coordinator if license has been suspended, revoked, cancelled or has expired. Report within 30 days any traffic violation convictions to the CSIU.
  17. Perform any other tasks for the CSIU when deemed necessary by the transportation coordinator.
  18. Help to enforce the policy that an adult must bring children to the bus and come to bus to get them.
  19. Pick-up and deliver supplies, as needed.
  20. Be responsible for maintaining a good atmosphere on the vehicle. Help to make the vehicle ride an enjoyable, learning time.
  21. Assist in clean up after a child has an accident or injury in the vehicle, following "Guidelines for the Prevention of Disease Transmission" standard procedure.
  22. Baby-sit during monthly Parent Meetings, if available.
  23. Promote a positive CSIU image in the community.
  24. Maintain confidentiality of all information relative to any and all students in our programs.
  25. In the event of an emergency, the children's safety is of greatest concern. Refer to the Head Start Transportation Emergency Procedures for a description of duties/responsibilities and complete accident report forms, as needed.
  26. In the event that no Bus Aide is available:
    1. Relay messages from parent-to-center and center-to-parent including health and safety of the students.
    2. Help children on and off vehicle when needed.
    3. Assist children to the seat. Make sure child is properly restrained in seat belt/car seat before the bus is in motion.
    4. Monitor student behavior and use appropriate disciplinary interventions.
    5. Make sure adult is at the bus stop.
  27. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

EDUCATION REQUIRED:  A high school diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).

 

LICENSING, CERTIFICATION AND CLEARANCES REQUIRED:  The school bus driver is required to possess a clean, valid Pennsylvania Operator’s License.  Must obtain or possess a clean, valid Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License and a school bus driver certificate.  All Pennsylvania school bus drivers must be certified under the Pennsylvania school bus driver Training Program and be able to pass the annual school bus driver physical.  Current required PA school bus driver documents must be carried on your person at all times when driving. 


ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:  Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:  Must have a safe driving record.  Must be able to drive various sizes and models of school buses.  Some experience working with children is preferable, but not mandatory.  Also must be able to follow oral and written instructions. 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically able to maintain a driving position on a bus.
  • Must have the ability to bend, stoop and squat to do pre-trip and post-trip inspections. Must be physically able to help children on and off the bus, help children in their seats and fasten seat belts or car seats, if applicable.

TIME REQUIREMENT:

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position.
  • Attendance at occasional day and/or evening meetings/trainings are required. Summer work is available on a limited basis for various duties and in various capacities. 
  • Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
