JOB TITLE:  Pre-K Counts Assistant Instructor

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The position of Pre-K Counts assistant instructor reports to the Pre-K Counts program and recruitment coordinator.

JOB DEFINITION: The Pre-K Counts assistant instructor is an integral part of classroom life and is expected to participate in all activities including some level of instruction, planning and assessment of children.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Take part in all classroom activities, including planning and preparation of daily activities
  2. Follow the Pennsylvania Learning Standards for Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten)
  3. Help with assessment and planning for each child.
  4. Carry out special programs for individual children.
  5. Help with breakfast, lunch or snack.
  6. Consult with parents about child's needs and progress.
  7. Keep necessary records.
  8. Maintain confidentiality.
  9. Attend and make use of appropriate training.
  10. Communicate effectively with children and adults.
  11. Use computer for program record keeping and communication.
  12. Help with lesson plan development
  13. Acquire classroom resources
  14. Help with planning parent-child orientation and parent-teacher conferences
  15. Perform Safe Crisis Management in the event students pose harm to themselves or others.

 

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:  A high school diploma or equivalent, plus, within the first 90 days of initial employment, Child Development Associate (CDA) level or attainment of the para educator competency checklist (as approved by the immediate supervisor) is required.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to accept great cultural diversity, flexibility to accommodate a changing caseload, ability to cope with stressful situations and a professional attitude are required. 

 

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:  Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS:   

  1. Attainment of 24 PQAS (Pennsylvania Quality Assurance System) hours of staff development annually.
  2. Attend training seminars and in-service programs identified as important to the operation of the instructional program.
  3. Training in First Aid, CPR and Safe Crisis Management are required and subject to recertification.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

  1. Must have strength and ability to lift young children (approximately 45 lbs.).
  2. Must have strength and ability to carry teaching materials/bags (approximately 20 lbs.).
  3. Must tolerate considerable bending, stooping and squatting.
  4. Must be able to assist children with self-help skills.

 

TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS:  

  1. Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
  2. This is a full time non-exempt position working a 185 days per year; 7.5 hours per day schedule which, at times, could include several evening hours; five days per week.

It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the CSIU upon termination of employment from the CSIU.

The person employed in this position shall maintain confidentiality with regard to the personal and private information about clients and coworkers, programs and services and any other proprietary information accrued as a result of CSIU employment or as required by state or federal laws and regulations.
