JOB ASSIGNMENT:  Special Needs / Part-Time

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:  The special needs school bus aide reports directly to the transportation coordinator and in his/her absence to the chief financial officer.

 

JOB DEFINITION:  The school bus aide is one, who is qualified in providing care for students, while in transit. This person shall be responsible to insure the safety and well being of all students to/from the designated pick-up point and to/from the assigned educational program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Report to the assigned pick-up point as directed by the transportation coordinator.
  2. Perform all procedures required for the health and safety of each student as related to the student's individual education program (IEP).  Assume responsibility for the care and safety of assigned students--never leaving the students unattended. 
  3. Understand and comply with IU and local district policies concerning student health and safety issues.
  4. Be alert to recognize symptoms or changing conditions of students and report these observations to the teacher/parent/guardian.
  5. Communicate to the teacher/parent/guardian problems concerning the health and safety of the student (in coordination with the teacher where applicable).  Maintain an emotionally stable and mature judgmental rapport with the children.  Recognize and cope with each one's unique therapeutic and developmental needs-- bringing matters of a supervisory nature with his/her passengers to the attention of his/her supervisor.
  6. Care for the need of the student in the event of an accident involving a student getting on/off the vehicle, or during transporting.  Each emergency has its own set of unique problems.  The safety of the student(s) is the aide's first responsibility.  If it appears necessary for a physician or 911 services to be contacted for emergency treatment, consult with the transportation coordinator via FM radio or telephone prior to placing any calls.  Assist in accident report follow-up.
  7. Maintain confidentiality of all information relative to any and all students in our program.
  8. Check all safety equipment that will be used for the students, i.e. wheelchair clamps, safety belts, safety vests, etc., used for safe transportation, prior to picking up students.
  9. Assist the student from the home to the vehicle in the case of a non-ambulatory student.  This can be done by directing younger children, pushing/loading wheelchairs or physically assisting those who have poor balance.
  10. Assist the students who are unable to walk and climb stairs onto/from the vehicle.  In the majority of cases the student can get on and off the vehicle under his/her own power.  The aide or driver should be stationed at the entrance to the vehicle, in close proximity to the student, to offer assistance as needed.  Independent mobility is stressed for those who are capable of independent motion.
  11. Assist the student to the seat.  All students should be secured in the seat with a lap/seat belt.  Students needing a safety vest should be secured in the vest before the vehicle is in motion.  Aides are also required to wear a seat belt.
  12. Position wheelchair students on the lift with care.  The driver will operate the controls necessary to put the lift in motion.  The aide and driver are responsible for making sure the chair is in a safe position and the student is not in danger during the process of loading / unloading.
  13. Assist with maintaining proper records, reports, and required forms on each assigned student.
  14. The Special Needs School Bus Aide is to work hand in hand with the driver.  There must be an open line of communication between the driver and the aide at all times.
  15. A team approach is required.   Render assistance as requested by the program/office staff, parent, aide, and/or teacher.   You are a vital component in the program needed to complete the team for the ultimate enhancement of the program.
  16. Assist in clean up after a child has an accident or injury in the vehicle, following "Guidelines for the Prevention of Disease Transmission" standard procedures.
  17. The Special Needs School Bus Aide is responsible for assisting in contacting parents, school, CSIU, or other contractors, if necessary, in the event of a delay and/or vehicle breakdown.  Assistance from the office staff is available.
  18. Attend program in-services as requested by the Student Transportation Coordinator.
  19. The Special Needs School Bus Aide is responsible to notify the Transportation Coordinator, Student Transportation Administrative Assistant when a substitute is needed.
  1. The Special Needs School Bus Aide is also responsible at times for pick-up and/or delivery of supplies at various locations and/or pick-up and/or delivery of vehicles enroot to/from service facilities.

 

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES: The school bus aide will perform any other tasks for the CSIU when deemed necessary by the transportation coordinator.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A High School Diploma, equivalent General Education Diploma (GED), or enrollment in classes toward obtaining a General Education Diploma (GED) within one (1) year of employment start date, is required.

 

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:  Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:  Some experience working with special education children is preferable, but not mandatory.  Must have the interest in and concern for children and their families. Must have the ability to follow oral and written instructions.

                                                                                                                          

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Strength and ability to occasionally lift and/or assist in lifting students and their assistive devices, (approx. 75 lbs.).  Must tolerate hours of sitting in one position and high levels of noise.  Considerable bending, stooping and squatting and using the steps to get in/out of the bus must be tolerated.  Must present a suitable demeanor and be tolerant of young children.  Must have sufficient physical, mental and emotional stamina to work under stressful situations when dealing with special needs students.  Must maintain an energy level sufficient for the job. 

 

TIME REQUIREMENT: 

  • This is a part-time, non-exempt position not to exceed working 29 hours per week.  Summer work is available on a limited basis for various duties and in various capacities.
  • Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.

  • All property, including intellectual property, materials, equipment or actual products and services developed or accrued as part of the job duties and responsibilities listed above, is the property of the CSIU.  It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the CSIU upon termination of employment from the CSIU.
  • The person employed in this position shall maintain confidentiality with regard to the personal and private information about clients and coworkers, programs and services and any other proprietary information accrued as a result of CSIU employment or as required by state or federal laws and regulations.
