JOB ASSIGNMENT: This position is located in specific locations within Bloomsburg and also Shamokin with occasional travel to the CSIU, Main Office in Milton.  The anticipated start date is January 6, 2025.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the Adult Education Program Manager and, in their absence, to the Chief Outreach Officer (COO).

 

JOB DEFINITION: The Adult Basic Education Instructor is responsible for delivering instruction, administering assessments, and providing digital literacy skill-building activities for adult learners. The instructor will help adults prepare for state-approved high school equivalency tests (GED and HiSET®). The instructor will help adults learn mathematics and reading, writing, and language arts at the middle and high school levels using approved curricula and teaching materials.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide instruction in a variety of content areas, contexts, and instructional formats in classrooms; an option to teach online as well will become available in the future after completion of training.
  2. Teach standard-aligned lessons and design interactive and engaging learning activities suitable for adult learners, with the support of ongoing professional development and peer mentoring.
  3. Implement research-based teaching and learning strategies in classroom settings, including the use of technology.
  4. Administer standardized assessments following publisher guidelines and program policies; administer formal and informal assessments to determine academic and workplace skill development needs.
  5. Develop and update individual learning plans with students, engaging learners in setting goals.
  6. Conduct new student orientation and intake sessions.
  7. Collaborate with student support staff to help learners overcome barriers to achieving educational and career goals and to assist in transition to employment, post-secondary education, or training.
  8. Maintain accurate and complete program paperwork, student files, and attendance records.
  9. Participate in continuous program improvement and professional development activities.

 

OTHER MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work cooperatively with program partners and community agencies to increase awareness of program services and the basic needs of learners.
  2. Attend staff development seminars, workshops, and conferences identified as important to operating an effective education program.
  3. Other program-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or designee.

 

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated proficiency in reading/writing/language arts skills, and mathematics.  An education degree or certification is not required.
  2. Experience teaching or supporting adults is preferred, but not required.
  3. Must exhibit an ability to communicate and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with colleagues and students, using diplomacy and tact.
  4. Must possess excellent oral and written communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  5. Must be proficient with common office and classroom technology, productivity software, and email.
